Sending texts from a PC

My mobile phone reception is pretty much zero at home and I often need to send texts.

I'm looking for website or an app from which I can send SMS texts to mobile phones. I have done this some years ago so I know it's possible.

Any pointers?

Some of the mobile operators have such a facility for their customers right on their websites - e.g. Vodafone.

Can be done via Skype (payment required).

Some mobile phone software can do it depending on make/model of phone - and some third party software has the facility.

Have you tried using an extension aerial up high and connecetd to the phone? perhaps modern phones do not have facility for this.

Skype is about 5.6p per text to UK numbers (even from overseas). We use WhatsApp to those that have it on their mobiles

Hugh - in either England or Sp

There was a report on our local TV a year or so ago about a guy who had similar problems and he rigged a rope and pulley high up in a tree and winched his phone up there to send and receive texts.

It was certainly a good bit of d-i-y :-)

It's not free, and I don't know whether any other suppliers offer anything similar:-

's a femtocell that uses part of your wired broadband bandwidth to give you a guaranteed signal on any mobile you register.

and it works well. I've had one for a few months. It does wonders for the phone battery life, too. But Vodafone phones only

Don't the other operators offer similar things?

There is an option on the Orange website to do this.

The Munch SMS app lets you send text via wifi from the iPod touch or other iDevices if you have one. There's SMS sheep that lets you send free SMS from a web browser. But my nasty side says that looks a good way to harvest phone numbers for later spam.

There are paid for services such as kapow.co.uk that offer web and email to SMS gateways.

I use voipcheap.co.uk for calls and SMS, 4.5p per text, but if you just want it for UK SMS then I would recommend one of their sister companies smartvoip.com. That costs 3.2p per text. It's on a pre-pay basis, and you can download their softphone to send SMS and make calls.

A not very well documented feature is that you can send predefined texts my constructing a URL like this.

That does looks good (free=good).

Is it reliable and spam free?

use it all the time. 2p a text, cheaper to non-British numbers. just top up by text message.

I'll second that, I've been using them for years and it works well at a good price

Vodafone 3G phones at that (doesn't work with Vodafone MVNOs like Asda either). mine works OK most of the time but falls over if I'm maxxing out my upload bandwidth sending stuff to Skydrive or wherever.

Your mobile phone service provider will give you (for example) 600 free webtexts per month. Just log into their website and find it on your account.

But isn't that covered by iPod/iPad/iPhone built in 'Message' ?

Pretty sure the o2 website allows you to send (or at least it used too) and did n't require you to have an o2 phone (Though you have to set up an account).

Do any of the previously mentioned methods allow for 2 way texting? (ie. if someone texts back, it can be forwarded to email perhaps).

Yes, it's reduced my recharging rate from every 24 hours, to every 72 hours.
