Antique PU foam doesn't exist. prior to about 1950 it was all horsehair. And lambswool.

Horsehair, wool and steel springs isn't a problem. There was almost no use of the problematic combustible foam materials prior to about 1954.

It was much worse back then since almost all adults smoked at home. Think Grenfell tower disaster but on a semi-detatched house scale and with the firelighter/napalm sat in the middle of the living room and an open fire or careless smoker. No domestic fire alarms back then either.

Fall asleep with a lit cigarette in your hand and you could wake up with your pants (and more besides) quite literally on fire.

At the time of the Act, they were merely secondhand rather than 'classics'.

If they are the latter, and filled with flammable foam, it might be worth investing in getting them re-upholstered to improve their value by making them safe. Just vehicles which need their asbestos stripping, which you can't even give away without that.

I believe you can buy fire safety tags on ebay....to add (after the foam is removed :-))

I've restored very early 1950s foam furniture (Festival of Britain era) and although we expected to find PU foam in there that would need replacement, it turned out to be latex foam. Still needed replacement, owing to wear, but only the seat pad needed doing, the back could stay unchanged.
