Scanning negatives (boots? Jessops?)

Hi All,

We need to get some 35mm negatives into the digital domain in a hurry (Fath er in law?s funeral coming up!) Either operating a machine ourselve s, or having it done.

I assume it?s possible to scan from negatives on the machines in Bo ots, Jessops, etc.

Could someone confirm this is the case?

TIA

Chris

I think they expect memory sticks.

bootsphoto.com just seems to be re-selling snapfish.co.uk printing (not scanning) services.

Jessops do it by a service where they send you a box, you send it back with slides/negatives etc in it, they scan and send it back, so doesn't sound suitable for a hurry - looks like this is probably outsourced to photolegacy.com

Google for a local photographic society / club. May be one on FB. Ask nicely explaining the circumstances and someone will almost certainly oblige for, at most, a few beer tokens. Assuming it is a sensible number of images.

Definitely the best suggestion from Chris, IMO. Not only putting it in the hands of someone who probably knows what they are doing but also inexpensive, involving the community of which I imagine your F-I-L was a part and, just as important IMO, relieving you of yet another task at a time when you have more than enough to do.

If that doesn't work out, Amazon sell photo scanners from forty quid to nearly two hundred. The cheap one ought to be good enough for a powerpoint stylee presentation but you need to spend the money if you want archive quality results.

Hope this helps.

It isnt, it's a specialist service that they may be able to do if they send the negs off.

Where are you? Lots of people have film scanners, and may be able to help you out.

I have a scanner that will do negs. There must be thousands of them about. Have you tried your local newsgroup?

Tesco say they do in-store slide scanning (may vary by store)

Your local library or council archives may also be able to help.

I mourn the days when even quite cheap scanners had a slide and negative scanner on them, with software to change the colours. I guess i don't need that function nowadays, but others would so I'm surprised nobody just offers it. its not rocket science, after all. As a matter of interest though how do they know not to scan stuff in mirror image? Brian

Thanks All,

I suggested getting professionals involved, but my wife has found a YouTube tutorial...,,

Scan with standard HO scanner, then invert & tinker in Photoslop.

If you are in West Sussex, then Whitbys in Chichester have a slide scanner in their shop.

It's just a case of having to put the negative in the right way, i.e. emulsion side up.

Yes, my wife has been doing a lot of them recently with a good scanner.

I second that emulsion.

If you don't have photoslop, can you use paint?

Irfanview is pretty good for fiddling with colours. And it's both free and portable...
