Is it safe to operate high-power devices such as a washing machine or a tumble drier using an extension cable that is rated for the current? I mean the sort of extension cable which is supplied coiled on a reel but which would be fully uncoiled.
Background:
One of the ring mains in our house has developed a fault which trips the RCD. There are two freezers, a washing machine, a tumble drier, and misc low-power electronics (Alexas, wifi network repeater) on that circuit, though the washer and drier were unplugged when it happened.
It happened while we were away on holiday and we lost all the contents of the two freezers :-( The RCD still trips with (AFAIK) all devices on the affected ring main unplugged. If all the MCBs (ring mains and lighting circuits) controlled by that RCD are turned off and the RCD is turned on, the MCBs can be turned on one by one and the offending MCB can be identified. It's not cumulative: it happens if *only* that ring main is turned on. Water in a cable? There had been heavy rain the day that the RCD tripped.
Until an electrician can be called to investigate and fix the problem, are we safe to run the washing machine and tumble drier (not simultaneously) using an extension cable from a different ring main?
We have an extension cable which has a rating plate that says 720 W coiled or 3120 W fully uncoiled. I'd be using it fully uncoiled. I'd check cable and plug/socket temperatures periodically.
If it's safe, it means that we can wash our clothes more easily than having to use a spare washing machine (left by the previous owners of our house) which is in the outside garage, and can dry our clothes in the tumble drier rather than hanging them over a drying rack in front of the Aga, which takes all day.
Obviously there is the trip hazard of a long cable laid along the hall, but we're adults and we know to take care!
Does the way that the cable is laid out matter? Is the "fully unwound" restriction more to ensure adequate cooling, or is there any inductive problem with a cable that is wound round a plastic drum? Is inductance even an issue, given that the current in the L will always be exactly equal and opposite direction to the adjacent N at any instant? Barring earth-leakage, of course!
(As an aside, we discovered that one side of our kitchen is on one ring main, one side is on another and the dishwasher and fan oven are on a third circuit. And the failed ring main is on a different RCD to the other ring main that has a third freezer and the aquarium heater/pump on it, so we didn't lose that freezer and all the fish. Until circuit breakers trip, you never investigate which sockets are on which breaker! It's tempting sometime to work out for the whole house which sockets are on which MCB, for future reference...)
