Shouldn't do, the contact wires in the socket are normally guided to keep them lined up, the plug also guides the wire for each of it's contact positions. The two outer contact wires just won't be guided quite as well by the plug.

But the edge plastic bits in what would be the 1 and 8 positions are thicker as they have no guide in the positions that don't exist
If you look at a BT xDSL faceplate, even though it's wired for 6 pins as it's for an RJ11, it's actually wider to allow an RJ45 to fit without causing damage.
