My mother had me looking through some of my father's stuff a few days back. In there were some cards with the common metric cruising heights for Russia and China converted to feet.

I just checked. Oil comes in barrels OR in metric tonnes. It is perfectly possible to buy a tanker load of oil in barrels and sell it in tonnes. There are some interesting arbitrages relating to buying by volume and selling by mass, (or vice versa) especially when the temperature varies a lot between the source and the destination ports.

Yes. That's common here (1935 house), but everything is still nominally a sensible imperial measurement.
Some years ago (mid-90s) I designed the control system and instrumentation for a compressor for ICI Billingham. ICI's specs were woefully out of date - such as requiring pressure instruments to have
1/2" BSP, parallel, male threads ... with greased leather sealing washers! They agreed to Dowty washers instead.
When designing industrial plant, the internal diameter is exactly what matters - it gives you the flow velocity for the required flow, the back pressure, etc. Which is critical for process, power and control requirements.
Copper pipe is an oddity probably because imperial used the definition of pipe, while metric uses the definition of tube - and pipes were assessed on the Nominal Bore, while tubes are and were by external diameter.

Professional Boxers still come in imperial weights - never changed. Amateurs I think are metric.
Bottom line:-) is what best to teach a mixed ability class of children. No reason why the more able can't handle historic complex stuff as needed.
If the world was starting from scratch, the MKS system would be my choice.
