I should probably get a structural engineer to do some calculations but all the quotes I have seem to be an attempt to tell me to go away (£4k+ !!).
I've got a hole in the ground I need to cover without filling in (old victorian water cistern, still in use). The hole will be under a patio but there is the risk of a small cherry picker being used on the patio in the future (access is limited to max 1.5m width).
The hole diameter is around 1.5m. I'm planning to cover it with a 150-200mm thick cast in-situ slab around 2.3m diameter, reinforced by A393 (10mm bar, 200x200mm) mesh.
The 2.3m diameter rests the slab on the surrounding soil rather than the brickwork of the cistern.
I think, given that the slab is in the ground (and thus damp) I need to put the mesh at least 75mm from the top / bottom / edges to reduce the risk of the mesh corroding.
There will be a 600x450 cutout in the middle of the slab for a cover to retain access to the underlying hole.
Obviously the form-work directly above the hole will need propping whilst the concrete hardens!
Anyone got any comments - anything from "don't do it, get an expert, £4k is worth it" to "that's well over the top" welcome!
