Recommndations for wood stain for large cabin wanted

Jul 04, 2026 2 Replies

We're looking at repainting our wooden cabin and would like some recommendations for wood stains to use.

It's all quite sound pine but it's patchy with some gone grey and some still light with the original treatment. We'd like to try something that will darken it a bit to merge the different areas somewhat.

Given that it's quite a big cabin we'd like something that only requires one coat.

So, recommendations please, for something light[ish] in colour (e.g. Light Oak or something in that area), preferably water based and not stupidly expensive.

I've used Sadolin for exterior timber protection. Range of colours but not cheap!>

Barretine for me but it is expensive and requires two coats, has kept my timber garage in good nick these last 10 years
