I also missed the start of this weeks Grand Designs programme and couldn't understand why the the log house was built on piers, with the height of the piers it looked as though you could push it over.
I read the other thread and the piers weren't mentioned.

It was because the land which the house was built on was carved into a hill, and wasn't level.
It was built on a sloping plot.

The piers were built of hollow concrete blocks with reinforcing rod running through the hollow cores which were then filled with fine concrete. Next to no chance of pushing them over even before you plonk tons of house on top.
What if a JCB reversed into one? Would that bring the house down?
