I have a few radio controlled clocks around the place. One of them shows hour + minute +seconds, temperature and the year. Who the hell might not know what year it is? Why not show the much more useful day and month?

You don't / cannot set it - you just put the batteries in and it gets its time from Anthorn. The only option is deg C or F.

I think the year display is just for user visual confirmation that the lunar moon cycles will match newspaper horoscope predictions and more factually that the daylight saving hour adjustments are indeed correct.

I doubt it. Lewap seconds are signalled specially.
