Back in the late 1990's my wife invited her mother to visit us and asked me for £300 to pay for an aeroplane ticket.

All I said was "What's wrong with her broomstick?"

Possibly up to 1 million UK residents were abroad at the time and subsequently returned. Providing quarantine places for so many people would have been impossible so they came back and did what the majority of us have done - self isolate if with symptoms and stay at home with social distancing.

I doubt if many people will be flying in. As you indicate what about delivery drivers coming in from the EU, what about all those people crossing the channel in rubber boats, what about pilots flying in goods/food/essential supplies? They all have the ability to infect others in the UK.

I suspect it is just political manoeuvring to appease those journalists and people on social media who want more of a lock-down.

Its killing lots of effniks innit.

OK, one would hope that everyone coming in by any means is known about and indeed where they are going. In that case, any cluster with a connection to them will be known.

In the last week or so, air travel has been ramping up, indeed listening to Heathrow just before and after 6am today showed aircraft movements from the following airlines to name but a few. Virgin British Airways Quantas China Airways Alitalia Aer lingus American United Some outfit called Eurotrans Iran Air Cathay Pacific

Those I can remember both coming and going from Heathrow, but obviously we have no way to know how full they all were, since these are movements, nothing more. Contrast that with just a week ago you would be hard pressed to hear one at that time of day.

So it is probable that as movements are now starting again it is an increasing issue. I do not know the status of shipping or the tunnel, but I do know that I have a friend who uses the tunnel several times a week and he has been stuck here with his wife who is a chief exec for some weeks now. It doesn't take that long to strip a plane of seats especially when currently there is plenty of spare capacity in the plane servicing industry.
