I have thought of building a decent bike workstand a few times. The feature which the 'proper' ones have which I guess would be hard to make is the clamp fitting which screws onto the top tube of the bike, and has a horizontal bearing which allows turning the bike to different angles - upside down etc. These usually have some form of 'click-stop' arrangement so the bike doesn't svivel round under its own weight.
If I could make or buy one of these fittings then welding up (or similar) the rest of the stand would be easy. Anyone have a source or d-i-y design for this sort of thing?
