They can probably be stopped by whoever is sending you the emails but not by the other people reading the news group (which is not based on sending email). I would expect that you could configure google groups to send you emails, without you giving details of the emails you are receiving no one here can offer any advice on which third party is sending them to you.

Is there still a DIY website that gives access? Maybe the OP has signed up to email notifications from there?

We really cannot help you. It sounds like a google mess to me, and I notice you have posted through the Google online system. Newsgroups ae re traditionally handled by client software that downloads subscribed groups. If Google no allow them to be turned into what are effectively mailing lists, then I can see big trouble ahead as they were never meant to be used this way.
I suggest you do one of two things. Look at your email set up and see if this function has been enabled somehow, and failing tht use googles filters to trash all emails from the offending location or account whichever is easiest.
