PAYG SIM minutes don't run out - no monthly top up

That is a good site. My site has a comprehensive list focused on PAYG. There is a section on inactivity, most plans use 180 days. Even if you are just wanting backup it is a good idea to use a SIM every couple of months to make sure that it is working when you need it.

O2 Classic and Three 321 are no longer available to new customers. However Three Data Rewards is still 3p/min, 2p/SMS and 1p/MB. It is reported that it works in phones despite being sold as Mobile Broadband.

The OP asks for a backup. The Vodafone PAYG 1 is potentially pricier but only when you use it. Rates are less important.

I disagree. It works well everywhere for me.

I have found it as good as any of the others. Round here there are EE places only, Vodafone places only and Three places only.

Exactly. The differences between the networks is small and unless the places you frequent are a blackspot for a particular network any of them are fine.

three.co.uk the 321 PAYG is nowhere to be seen. Looking at the T&Cs it looks like it was removed in March or May. I forget which.

Apparently the reward SIM is still available.

I *am* in Scotland. East coast. Been to the highlands and the west coast. Yes it didn't always work, but it was the same for family members on different networks. That's why we're on different networks, usually one of us will have reception or none of us.

Or even Northumberland. Just try comparing Vodafone?s coverage map with Three?s. Three doesn?t seem to go in for rural areas so much. I can vouch for Vodafone?s map being coincident with my own personal experience of the area. No Three coverage in Orkney and almost none in Shetland. If you travel around the UK and you want to maximise your chance of getting coverage Three is not a good choice.

I hardly ever use my PAYG for outgoing calls. Have to remind myself to use it sometimes. That's Vodaphone.

I'm sure none of the mobile suppliers want low users on their networks. They all want you to commit X pounds per month where the credit runs out after 30 days.

Even if they offer traditional PAYG it's often very hard to find on their web sites and often even more difficult to sign up without knowing that you have to order WITHOUT additionally selecting a bundle type deal. There is a difference between PAYG and SIM only deals where the suppliers often blur the details about the difference between them.

I note with some suppliers that if you first sign up to a PAYG option and then later decide that you want a bundle deal for a month the PAYG option ceases to be valid and you have effectively chosen to sign up for something else where credit runs out - and seemingly afterwards the credit on PAYG also runs out after 30 days! (The GiffGaff offer doesn't do this - the bags are an optional one month add-ons that don't effect the PAYG).

Or as in my case I live in a blackspot for all networks. I use EE now because they seem to be the only network that does SMS as well as voice over WiFi.
