I think with all those the extent of the hazard was not at all realised at the time.

Bare live metal was really not normal then, outside of heaters, the device in question must have been a very nasty import or some such. Surely no-one would buy such things if they knew it had a 50/50 chance of all being live. You've got to go a lot further back in history to see that sort of practic e under the heading of acceptable.

Sure, but if on a plastic deck the spindle would not be made live. Plastic arms were also the usual, and fishpaper could have been used if a metal one were for some reason fitted.

I can only think that either the appliance was illegal & disreputable or so mething has got mixed up in the memories. 1950s guitar amps with RC insulat ed input were around, those don't normally cause shocks, though of course t here have been occasional deaths resulting from capacitor failure. A setup like that would have been acceptable at the time.

Bowl heaters had a bunch of serious extra safety problems compared to bar f ires. It's why we don't have them today, with the exception of illegal Chin ese imports on dodgy sites.

And talking of safety, I had Clix plugs... even then they were considered i ffy. I did have one worse one though, it had a sharpish prong on each pin, and the pins hinged. Put the flex in, close the pins and the prongs went in to the flex. Yes it worked, but the reliability & ampacity of the resulting contacts were inadequate.

Sure. But there are reasons people ignore them, other than not knowing or not caring. Often people that report stuff get grief for doing so.

Yes, they make the noises but some companies are no better than the original construction contractors that used to blacklist workers for wanting a canteen or somewhere to dry clothes.

I do not give a damn, if I see something wrong I point it out and produce the report, I am not dependent on the work for a livelihood any more, although I do enjoy what I am employed to do.

If something is a hazard, I dont personally have a choice, it has to be reported or rendered safe, to knowingly see a hazard and do nothing is not an option. The hazard becomes accepted and so does the next one to come along and before long you are working on an unsafe site surrounded by a bunch of cowboys who accept that taking risks is part of the job.

I am not the idiot that screams across the plant at some poor bloke that hasn't the full hi vis or isnt wearing safety glasses when fifty metres from the nearest "work" activity incidentally:-)

In this case the right answers are the answers that they want to pass pass their little quiz.

As I have pointed out to a lot of the eye rollers, if I am going to do something, I will do it correctly.

If I am not happy with something, I do not sign it off and ignore the bits that I dont think apply. Documentation and procedures are wrong for no good reason apart from people cannot be bothered modifying the rules/ paperwork to comply with what is done.

I am always concious that if something were to happen and I was to suffer a serious injury on site, the clients solicitors would go through my paperwork and activities with a microscope. Any departure from the "rules" or method statement would mean that instead of some delectable ravishing young nurse changing my nappies, I would be in the hands of some twenty stone ex womens wrestler from Siberia, who's hands had still not arrived at room temp :-(

It's much like some of the in-work training courses taken sat in front of a computer that some employers use which end in a set of questions to ensure that you have understood the contents and also workplace survey based on the training. Employees soon learn how to answer the survey questions in such a way to avoid future hassle. Tick the wrong box and you get a personal action to fix a building design problem that you have no control over. The amount of possible hassle is usually inverse to the importance of the training.

And I have broken every reg in the book.

That would never be allowed on site!

The diameter of the coax would make it dfficult to read the "do not use" label.

Come on now, apprentices are a perfectly valid sacrificial piece of test equipment.

I'd say the same about students ;-)

Some of those piercings must be a bit dangerous in a high voltage laboratory.

We don't allow our students to go above 50V in my lab, personally I wouldn't trust most of them about 5V. Don;t forget the dangers of Neodymium magnets, put those in your pocket with some genital piercings for a laugh :-)

50V? God. Back in my schooldays, 11 year olds were experimenting with CRTs, with 3500V or more on two banana plugs PLUGGED BACKWARDS onto the protruding pins - ie: with the live pins sticking out each side.

Right next to them, the next child was doing an experiment with water!

Exactly so which products work at 3500V with wather next top them not many I bet. With memory chips on modern PCs have 1.8V not 3V or 3.3V not even 5V or 12V Most circuits run between 5V and 3.3V now we have little use for higher vo ltage experiments.

But I am trying to work out the best lab experiment that proves current run ning through a wire can atract or repell another similar wire and the force produced between them. AT the moment we are using a seesaw type arrangement where the coils are at one end and we use small wieghts along the seesaw to measure the force pro duced by the two coils, it's a bit hit and miss, I doubt putting a few thou sand volts through it would help, but it would makle it more fun for me. ;- )

I think that you'd end up (for a very short period), with a small, magnetic trebuchet :)
