A relation has recently taken over a flat, which has interior doors of dark-stained wood. They make the flat seem dark, and she wants to paint them a lighter colour. Is there anything special she should do to prepare the doors because they're stained? Special undercoat? Oil-based paint? Or will the usual water-based paint be OK?

Anything with a dark background will need a decent undercoat if you want a light finish. In my experience. Zinsser products are very good and cover well, but I have not tried them on dark-stained wood. Have a look through these to see if any of them are suitable:

A good de-grease, and a sand to give it a key, then possibly a decent primer, then high build undercoat, and a final top coat of whatever she fancies.
