OK next Q - wrt preparation would a jet wash be a suitable way of cleaning off the old surface (either with or without wirebrushing) ? It was painted 15 years ago

That really depends on how sound the current paint/surface is. A jet washer will take out the pointing if it has any slight weak points... It will also be very messy with water/paint/bits etc flying everywhere.

A compressed air needle gun might be better and less effort than a hand held wire brush.
