OT Ping Chris Hogg

Yow!

I'm getting myself hyped up to rake and spike the front lawn. A few years ago I used Evergreen complete 4 in 1, I know that you don't think much of it. I would have used this stuff in the summer. It killed the moss allright, the dead moss looked awful so I never used it again. Thing is that I've got loads left. The instructions say to use between April and September.............. Would it actually do any harm or good to use it in the next few days when I rake and spike the lawn and should I use it before or after the raking/spiking?

Taa.

It's a high-nitrogen fertiliser, designed to get the grass growing. At this time of year, with colder weather and shortening day-length, plants generally, including grass, are slowing down for the winter. If you apply 4in1 now, it might encourage a late flush of growth, which may need a late cut especially if the weather is mild, but I guess a lot of the 4in1 will be wasted, i.e. will just wash through without being taken up by the grass.

I'm not sure how the moss will react, if you've still got any, but be prepared for it to go black. As for timing relative to raking/spiking, if the grass puts on a spurt of growth, raking will be harder work, so I'd apply the 4in1 after raking. A late flush of growth may help the grass to recover and fill in the dead mossy patches.

I don't think it will matter whether you do the spiking before or after you apply the 4in1.

You're welcome. As to ES not working, you're not with Hack Hack, by any chance? :-0

I still can't see my OP here, but your reply is here. I'm Virgin Media, been with them for yonks. I'll rake/spike the lawn, then put the Evergreen stuff down, it seems a shame to bin it.

Thanks again for the help, us expert gardeners have to stick together. Ahem ............

Because I got a letter from them warning me about cross posting. I made them ring me. Because I got a letter from them warning me about typing "ni***r". I made them ring me. I think that today was the first time that ES let me down.

But hang on here! I'm going back to when it was Blueyonder groups. I've just subscribed to news.virginmedia.com. Do you know if they get upset if somebody says anything beastly about Muslims etc?

If somebody makes a complaint about a person using the "n" word (ffs) do they look into it? On ES you can say whatever you like - but I understand that they take a dim view of spamming.
