Pretty OT I know, but as I asked the question here, it might help someone out there to post the answer back.
I was trying to get my old OE mail folders on an XP box onto a new Win 7 PC running Thunderbird V16.0.
Installed TB on the old PC alongside Outlook Express Launched TB and performed Tools-Import-Mail operation electing to import mail folders only from Outlook Express.
Having completed this operation, I could now access the folders of old OE mail in Thunderbird but still on the old PC. By default, after the import process, these folders were grouped inside a folder named Outlook Express Import.
Under Tools-Account Settings on old PC, noted the path to the local account profile folder.
Under Tools-Account Settings on the new PC, noted path to local account profile folder.
At first I simply copied the Outlook Express Import folder from the profile folder on the old PC to the profile folder on the new PC. For some reason TB couln't see this top level folder on the new PC. So I moved the individual mail folders into the route folder defined in the account setttings path (individual mail folders such as DIY, Gardening etc) and voila - I can now access all my saved DIY emails. Note that in TB, the folders containing mail items don't have any file extensions.
