OK so I didn't expect to whiz Northward round the M25 from J12 (M3) to the St. Albans exit but, it was 5.30pm on a Sunday afternoon!

Mostly M4 traffic joining.

Anyone care to suggest an alternative route as I have to repeat this next Friday:-(

Or. Is there a best time to repeat the torment?

Google helpfully calculates that if you leave after 8pm you might scrape it in under an hour ...

When I used to do that journey I went South and through the tunnel. However I did travel Friday night after 19:00 IIRC. And it was to the A12.

However the main lesson was to go late in the evening if at all possible, so 17:30 might be a little early.

Cheers

According to Waze plotting a journey from Fleet Services to St Albans City Station:

Arrive Journey time

0700 55m 0800 1h01 0900 1h00 1000 58m 1100 1h02 1200 1h11 1300 1h19 1400 1h29 1500 1h31 1600 1h39 1700 1h37 1800 1h34 1900 1h20 2000 1h09 2100 57m 2200 55m 2300 55m 0000 55m

You would have to search at the time to see what routes it offers, but currently it's only showing me M25.

When the M25 was very wet a few weeks ago, I turned off at Heathrow and went M25 - Northolt - Wealdstone - Bushey - Elstree - Borehamwood - A1 which was about the same time duration, but that's because you couldn't do more than

40mph on the M25. Out of peak times that route pops up but it's usually a half hour slower than the M25. It's mostly 30/40mph suburban roads (quite rural in parts).

Hmm. So any afternoon travel on that route adds 30mins. to the journey:-(

It has crossed my mind to wonder if cutting across to the M4 would help. Miss out the crawl by Heathrow!

Oh well! At least I discovered the outside lane is best.

Tedious trip from Bournemouth.

Thanks.

Sadly my passengers from Bournemouth are not free until 12.00:-)

Long way round for St. Albans!

At least there are no travellers expected for cup finals etc.

From Bournemouth right now it says: M3/M25: 2h16 A34/Newbury/M4/M25: 2h32 A3/M25: 2h45

The M25 between Heathrow and Watford doesn't seem to have any good alternatives :(

Go and have a long lazy lunch somewhere first, then, before setting out.

I would expect that M4 to the North Circular, then round to Staples Corner and up the M1 would take appreciably longer than staying on the M25. However, at least you would be moving.

stay on the M3 then follow A316 to Richmond, then Kew Bridge and N Circular

Hmm. Plus £12.50 profit for the Mayor:-(

1959 - a lot fewer cars on the road back then. (And fewer motorways.)

Hmm. 1964 I used to drive through central London to get to a commissioning job at Lewes. Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner, Park Lane...then down the A23!

East End to Reading commute, 1978. The Highway, Embankment, Hyde Park Corner, Hammersmith, M4. The only sticky bit was Billingsgate, when one carriageway was closed in the morning. That's Lower Thames Street, not the current site.

I drove west to east about ten years ago, and couldn't believe the disaster that had been made of London's roads. I don't think I've driven inside the North Circular since then, and only go in on public transport for the occasional hospital visit. If I'm not welcome there (I was born in the City of London) then neither is my money.

if the vehicle isn't compliant, stick to the M25.

Mm. I have on occasion used the more londonly route, but the other alternative is to somehow make your nothings well clear of london

Going south means you simply queue and hour for the tunnel and pay for the privilege.

A322/A329(M) M4 A404(M) A4010 to Aylesbury and then your choice depending in whether you want more northerly or londonly destination A lot more miles, but I have found that both my peace of mind and my fuel are optimal on uncluttered roads where I can proceed at my own pace

Yes. Last time I drove back to Suffolk from Hyde Park and the Eric Clapton concert. Late Sunday, City should be empty...

Chicanes, 20mph zones, roads blocked off. - Took an hour to get to the first decent road near the City.

Last time I was in Soho it was crawling with Albanian thugs.

London can go f*ck itself and Sadiq Khan is doing that most efficiently.

Take a wrong turn and in the congestion charging zone :)

Earlier this year I did a 3am journey around the M25 to find it closed and diverted to a section of the North Circular. Boy, it was slow even at that time of day. Traffic lights everywhere.

On that journey I also encountered the M1 being closed between junctions for overnight roadworks. That diversion was also slow although diverted traffic was moving fairly constantly. At least half a dozen roundabouts being navigated by a stream of HGVs.
