In the 1970s before the South side of the M25 was fully open I found it quicker to go through Central London than use the Dartford crossing at midnight to 4 am.

What really helped was one day my car broke down and put on the back of a recovery vehicle. The recovery driver was expert at avoiding London traffic. North of the river he took a route through the docklands warehouse district, through a dodgy East End housing estate and narrow back streets. Most of the route at that time of night was completely free of traffic. It's a route I subsequently took for couple of years whilst I still had to make that journey.

Occasionally on one of my regular long journeys I will elect to take the more scenic route rather than sticking to the motorways for the whole journey. Usually traffic flows smoothly on these routes.

I regretted that discussion a few weeks back having been stuck in a convoy behind a little yellow Fiat. Single lane winding road for around 19 miles with few places to overtake. I assume that the Fiat driver thought he was driving safely at a maximum of 40mh in a 60 limit (dry road, good daylight). Unfortunately he braked at every slight bend in the road and going up even the slightest incline his speed fell back to around 25mph. It was very frustrating for me and my fellow motorists behind him constantly having to brake or change gear because of his erratic driving speed.

That's why I have twin turbos and a shade under 300 horses on tap.

If I have to overtake 6 cars at a time |I will

In this case very few overtaking opportunities, mainly because of oncoming traffic. In that 19 miles only about 6 cars managed to get in front of him/her. I ended up with two cars between me and the Fiat before I turned off in a different direction.

I have found that the reality is not that there are very few opportunities, but that there are very few drivers who know how to exploit them, to the point where they think they do not exist and will actively try and stop others from exploiting them

I grew up and learnt to drive in an era of underpowered cars and no dual carriageways.

A few years back I overtook a porsche in a series III landrover.
