OT: Engine remaps

Suggests either a failed DPF or a DPF delete. Proper high performance modern diesels with DPF should not show traditionally sooty/dirty exhausts.

Even VAG vehicles with emissions defeat software didn't have sooty/dirty exhaust. The whole point was the NOX emissions were way up but it looked clean. If it looked dirty it would not have passed the emissions checks it was cheating.

Current car learns how the driver applies the throttle and also decides when to change up/down, how long to hold revs before changing etc. within the performance mode selected.

There are 2 driver profiles so you could have different throttle/gear profiles for husband/wife. (Or wife/wife or husband/husband, must be inclusive.)

The Scudo uses a litre of oil every 8000 to 10000 miles of driving. Now I cannot see it smoke until it is dark and there is a car behind me with the headlights on.

Then don't tell them. They are not going to find out. Must have been like that when I bought it and they said nothing (unless or course it was a brand new car).

You could always adjust the timing belt on the Berlingo to make it go a bit faster. Now did the mechanic modify the Berlingo or put it back as it was meant to be?

AA bloke said that my EGV that failed not so long ago could just be left closed up and remapped out of the van and still pass an MOT. Maybe RDS has bought a car with a closed up EGV and it needed remapping.

Yep, most of the best systems do that to allow for the variation with age with the plugs etc.

Yep.

Yeah, On the topic of buying cars with poke, I sold our other car to my son, who had it remapped [1] and has since thrown it through a dry stone wall [2]. Insurance are non the wiser.

[1] I didn't bother having it remapped, it was quick enough, but when he did and it yielded good results I decided to have our Volvo done, because it was otherwise a bag of crap. [2] The daft ####. 5 years i'd had that car and was very fond of it.

It can certainly be done with aftermarket ECUs used in kit-cars and modified cars. The auto-mapping does not do as good a job as a proper rolling-road set up by all accounts.

It's true you can increase the power of a diesel by over-fulling, but that is going to have a very serious effect on the emissions.

Modern petrol engines certainly re-map themselves to a degree. Retard the ignition when using low quality fuel. And the lambda sensors keep the mixture within limits.

If you mean things like MegaSquirt, they basically auto tune to the AFR map you've entered, by using a wideband O2 sensor. But they don't auto tune the ignition map in the same way - except by momentarily retarding that if a knock sensor is fitted.

A rolling road is excellent for tuning for maximum power, etc, but not so good for the rest of the map. Especially given how expensive rolling road time is. For that part of the mapping auto tune is very good indeed.

It happens that Dave Plowman (News) formulated :

A diesels power output is controlled or throttled by the injection period / how much fuel is injected for each induction stroke. Some engines are deliberately throttled to less than the maximum, so those engines can be remapped without worsening the emissions.

My BMW engine has been remapped, which has added 30bhp, improved the torque, made it more tractable and a much nicer drive. Emissions and economy have been improved slightly.

It's a turbo, though?

I think it was suggested that some vehicles (some brand of motorcycle?) were able to detect when they were being put though an emissions test cycle and adapt accordingly. If they thought they were doing this when being used on the road they became very unresponsive?

Dave Plowman (News) expressed precisely :

I had a Jag XR8 and in the handbook it mentioned "optional" cup holders. The Jeeps on the other hand came with everything as standard, electric seats, acd, cruise control his and hers fob keys alloy wheels etc.

Trying to get a copy of 'The Brexiteers Bible'.

I managed to find a second hand copy yesterday but most of the pages were stuck together?

It came with a free crystal ball but it doesn't seem to work? ;-(
