Yesterday evening 28th June around Teal Staffordshire @ 3.3R and 7k depth.

We get loads of very small earthquakes in the UK, but fairly few as high as 3.3 on the Richter scale.

I was on the top floor of our house when we had a quake around that size, and it was a distinctly unpleasant feeling.

Houses here are not designed for earthquakes, so the small ones we get here probably feel worse than they otherwise might. I was in the 7.1 in San Francisco in 1989, and a couple of mag 6 in the previous years.

It's just magnitude 3.3 nowadays, the Richter Scale is no longer used.

I experienced the 2002 West Midlands earthquake. And like many, checked teh washing machine as this was the first and probably last time I will live through that in England.

We had some arty table lamps, and the dangly bits shook. It's one of the few times where something you see on TV is exactly what happens.

I remember being on the island of La palma for a day, and the locals never seemed to bat an eyelid when the earth wobbled like that and all the china jingled in where we were eating etc, they know its the volcano just having a funny turn. I'm still not quite sure why people want to live so close to an active volcano. Brian

Why? If its the same scale? I know its log, not linear, which means that the bigger ones are a lot bigger than you might actually think. Brian

Specifically ruled out, due to the location and depth, according to reports.

They make for very fertile soil, when not covering it with lava.

There's some sort of explanation here:

There are no mines that deep there.

There is no alternative there.

We don't use centigrade now either. In fact we never should have :)

Nor Fahrenheit nor Réaumur? But how were the originators of such scales to know that they should never have used them? We should of course all be using Kelvins, which puts global warming into perspective.

I knew they shouldn't have banned fracking
