Alternative suggestion: spend a bit more on an ink-jet. After our 4th or so ink-jet blew its power supply, and after having printers that ate through their ink cartridges, we spent rather more for a canon G6000, prolly £300. It has refillable ink tanks. After a year not only are we still using the ink we filled it with originally, that came with the printer, but about 2/3 of it is still left. So one fill should last well over two years.

Just turned it on to check the ink levels, and also notice that it doesn't spend much time making lots of mechanical noises every time I turn it on.

Be patient and keep a lookout for Freecycle offerings. I have 4 lasers, all from there. Two of them are colour - one not very good but the latest is an HP Laserjet Pro 200 which is fine, even for photos, althought the overall shade isn't as good as my Epson inkjet.

To me unless you do need one, black and white is the way to go. I've never been a fan of colour lasers, too many have low amounts of the toner for the colours or lose their image registration as the black and whit bit seems to get used more.

HP used to be about the best. Brian

I've had colour laser printers for many, many years. I've not had the problems you describe, but I've tended to buy business quality machines.

HP use cartridges with the print head a part of it, this means a new head for every new cartridge. The only time they cause a problem is when the cartridge is on empty.

oops should have said HP inkjets.
