OT: A question of odds

Well Ladbrokes probably know their stuff but I'm intrigued to know how they came up with the figure.

On the face of it it seems like the odds ought to be either longer or shorter.

Ladbrokes might know their stuff, but this was probably put out by their PR/media team.

The fundamental issue is that the parents already have the same birthday as each other and have already been born. So there are two possible outcomes when the child is born - same day as both or different day to both.

Simplistic view is one in 365. Without considering anything that affects which day of the year.

This is of course a different question to asking "What are the odds that two parents and their child have the same birthday?" and will have different odds.

Recent research suggests it's much lower than you might think. (they've tracked names and Y chromosomes ... can't find the reference, was on slashdot a few weeks back)
