In history resources for children, the plotter who tried to blow up Parliament and King James I is counted among civil rights activists “who wanted to change the world”.
The BBC Bitesize material for primary schools ranks Fawkes alongside Rosa Parks, the civil rights activist, Emmeline Pankhurst, the suffragette, and Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader.

Weren't the Catholics being dreadfully oppressed at the time?

I guess Muslims will claim they are being dreadfully oppressed at this time?
And, like the puritans later, they (or rather their leaders) wanted to be the ones doing the oppressing. They weren't blowing up the king to replace him with democracy and freedom of religion.
Hopefully schools will teach the background of religious oppression by both catholic and protestant rulers, along with the general evils of absolute monarchy.
