If they somehow all broke, I think that would only impact starting, and you would be able to start it by flicking it like John was doing, although it would then run in either direction.

I can only imagine a couple of faults which might do this...

  1. Bearing failure is allowing the rotor to be pulled against the stator or frame when a magnetic field is applied, or
  2. The squirrel-cage has broken on the rotor, so there's no current flow induced to generate the turning force.
