Not so Smart Meter?

The meter only logs your consumption, for charging, it's down to the customer to organise the saving..

  1. Either watch the meter, and reduce consumption.
  2. Make use of the meter, and find a cheaper tariff.
  3. A bit of both.

Even so, there are cheaper standard tariffs out there, if you have a smart meter. I'm on Tracker, on two days this week, it was near half the cost of a standard tariff, and there have been three or four hours of power offered for free.

With the free pink gadget, from Octopus, you get access to all of that. It connects your meters directly to the internet, and Octopuses servers, to send them your readings every ten seconds. An API allows you full access to the data, so you can do what you like with the data, or...

There are various ready rolled Apps, which display the data for you..

Interesting! What should I replace the 'curl -u' with, to get that to work? Powershell complains..

Invoke-WebRequest : Parameter cannot be processed because the parameter name 'u' is ambiguous. Possible matches include: -UseBasicParsing -Uri -UseDefaultCredentials -UserAgent. At line:1 char:6

  • curl -u "YOUR_API_KEY:" "https://api.octopus.energy/v1/electricity-me ...
  • ~~ + CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (:) [Invoke-WebRequest], ParameterBindingException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : AmbiguousParameter,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.InvokeWebRequestCommand

Powershell has its own alias to make curl to use Invoke-WebRequest, so use cmd.exe instead of powershell

I'll have to investigate that. I have an Android app geoHome which talks to my (Octopus) IHD and displays (amongst other things) usage from midnight one day to midnight the next. It agrees very accurately with the figures given by the Octopus Android app and the Octopus Android website, apart from the fact that the geoHome is rounded to one decimal place rather than two (app) or three (website) for both elec and gas, and that the app/website readings take -king ages to be available.

I've just noticed a "funny". I've no idea what this is all about. For the first two days after a gas reading appears for a given day, the gas readings on geoHome, app and website match. Then the app and website values are adjusted by a factor of 0.96 (based on two days' values) so the revised reading is slightly lower. The sum of the revised readings over a long period (eg 1 Sep to 20 Sep) is the one which matches the difference between cumulative reading for 20 Sep and the one for 1 Sep. So it looks as if the app and website are initially over-reading slightly and are then being corrected. Goodness knows what that is all about!

Calorific Value adjustment ?

Is this kWh converted from cubic meters being reported. Perhaps the GeoHome doesn't know the a average calorific value of the gas being used and is just using the nominal 40MJ/m3 figure whereas the utility company may be using calculating a rolling average of the value which typically 40 +/- 7% in the UK

I wondered whether it was something calorific value.

But... Octopus themselves display the slightly wrong value on their app and website, and then revise those figures a day or so later. Every time, the incorrect value is displayed for "Yesterday" and then a couple of days later, that day's values reduce.

It's as if Octopus themselves are initially using the wrong value and then correcting themselves.
