name for coating needed

I need the name for a coating so i know what i am asking for when going to purchase it.

a friend of mine saw some contractors painting outside bricks with some black substance, prior to filling back with soil. The bricks refer to those below ground level. The purpose of what i am trying to do is to make it damp proof so no water can penetrate through.

Anyone know what i can use for this purpose?

Bitumen. Use old brushes cos you can't clean the stuff off.

================= 'Bitumastic' is a common brand name. You can use paraffin to clean brushes - possibly diesel.

Hi,

Bitumastic paint on brickwork will stop damp, but if you want to stop water ingress then some sort of tanking might be necessary.

cheers, Pete.
