Mountain Bike -click from the crank.

I have a 2006 Giant XTC LC mountain bike, and when I put weight on the pedals during cycling, there is a loud clicking sound as the crank goes round (it's fine when unloaded). I'm guessing it's the bearing.



As the bike has done less than 700miles in it's entire life, i'm guessing it's the cheap s*it bearings they fitted.



What do I need to get as a better replacement that's going to last? Do I need an special tools to change it? I would rather replace it myself, as the local shop put a heavy markup on this sorta stuff.

It will most probably be a sealed cartridge. They thread into the frame at the BB. Can seize up. They generally need a special tool, similar to a large Torx bit to undo them, some can be got off with a pipe wrench. All depends on which one you have. Probaby best to take your old one out to get the measurements, as there are numerous sizes and crank fittings. I'd take a bet that yours would be one of these:

As you see, there are numerous sizes, so you need to find which you want.

The more you pay, the better they are, the one linked above is a bottom end one, you can pay £100+ for normal use BBs, £300+ for exotica.

You might be guessing wrong. IIRC from when I was but a yoof clicking from that area was down to worn/loose cotter pins(*) holding the crank onto the shaft. Have 'em out and any signs of wear or distortion replace 'em.

B-) Like to hazard a guess as to when I was yoof? ...

I do have a "modern" bike but have not had any requirement to look in detail at how the cranks are attached.
