Mobile PV setup design?

I feel you need to get a job D i m, then you could afford all the things you piously demean others enjoying... who knows you might meet more people too (probably not like minded but that's going to be a good thing, trust me!)...

Anyway shurely you're wasting precious planet warming energy (& time, tho I note you seem to have rather a lot of that available) feeling the need to "retaliate".... How's that sit with your rather burnt-wheel-paint smelling "green wash credentials" these days?

Funnily I wondered if it was in fact you posting as the op in one of your nym shifts... Lots of similarities...

Anyone here know about designing a mobile PV setup - I've been handed an IC-BP3000-24 controller, six LSLC42-12 12v deep cycle batteries and five big PV panels on stands...



My local beekeeping group have given me the job of building this into a mobile setup that we can take to local shows (don't ask why!). Everything has to fit in the back of an estate car.



My initial idea is to put the batteries wired as 3x24v in parallel on a piece of 18mm ply with casters and handles (it'd be heavy). The controller and breakers etc. to be on another board which will mount on top of the battery board (plug together on site). It would also help if one or two of the battery pairs were easy to remove in cases where they're simply not needed.



Normal panel connectors are locking (MC4s), so can't be used (can't rely on always having the unlocking tool around). I'd also like the option of just using one or two panels in cases where we simply don't need 5!



Would really appreciate input on this. Types of breakers, connectors, cable size etc.



Should point out that I'm a micro-electronics guy by training but have done a fair amount of power electronics, so have a healthy respect and understanding of the risks involved, hence I am aiming to do this 100% safely & correctly, i.e. correctly sized cables, breakers & connectors etc.

But the "why" is really important as it may be a lot easier just to put the batteries on a trolley with a charger and recharge from the mains overnight.

Depending on light levels, orientation etc you may not get much daytime charging anyway, and you might not get the space or location at a "show" to get the panels out and pointing in the right direction.

All good points, but it's more to do with "green credentials" than practicality.

As a scientist and engineer, it makes little sense, but as an organic beekeeper, it's clear as day :) i.e. it's as much for demonstration & principle as practicality.

We have space at local shows - so that's not a problem. The controller we have allows for mains charging (it's actually a pretty neat unit), so we will indeed be "mainly" running from batteries, but at our apiary, we don't have mains, so we'll use the panels to float the batteries.

So, my original statement stands - the system as a whole needs to be portable - otherwise a home charger plus a caravan inverter is all that would be required.

Simple. We don't make tea and the screens showing our videos & microscope images don't run.

On the upside, that wouldn't be important as when it rains, most folks don't go to country shows, so the footfall would be down. This means that we'd have the opportunity to talk to all the visitors sheltering from the rain in our marquee, rather than having them watch screens until we get round to them!

Being serious (sort of), the BeeKeepers' stand is always very popular at these shows - most of us have been bee keepers for a lot of our adult lives, so we're always happy to have new recruits!

What is the system used to power?

If its in winter you won't get much out of six panels even the 300W ones so its not much use for heating and stuff like that.

I know someone with, I think, twelve panels facing due south and they are lucky to get much more than ~170kWHrs for the three months of winter.

So six panels will average about 1kWHr a day.

You may get a bit more if you track the sun. Even more in summer as the track is longer than winter.

Buy a generator, put it in a "soundproof" housing and prop a couple of the solar panels up to disguise it :-P

Best idea yet and an accurate representation of the delusion AKA "green" and "renewable" energy policies.

A neat little 4-stroke suitcase genny (if that's what they're called) and a sound system playing nature and bee noises to disguise the generator hum.

Reliable and "better for the environment" as not having to cart a a few

100Kg of batteries around. :)

Personally to me this sounds more suited to a trailer than a purely portable set up. too many high current bits to cause problems on assemble or while in the back of a motor. Brian

Note I used a "smiley" - the setup will be used at our out-apiary where we have no power - it's not "virtue signalling" as we're not being smug or self-congratulary about it - there is a direct practical usage.

With this setup, there is little environmental gain - however, we were given all the components, so rather than put them in landfill (which would certainly not help anyone), we've decided to use them.

It's interesting that a genuine request for assistance has not produced a single constructive answer - just a load of fairly random noise, comments about alternatives and weak attempts at wit. Rather sad, really.

I am genuinely looking for advice on this sort of setup - probably, even though this is an essentially DIY project, this group is the wrong place.
