Umm.. I've taken the sim out now.

Going through the above instructions got me to an offer to download from a .vcf but nothing on a sim. I suppose the phone knows I don't have one plugged in!

Shunting these things about from generations of phones with different sized sims is a pain.

You can get USB SIM readers as well - so could get them off and converted to a .vcf that way if you wanted.

Yes, it's quite difficult to disconnect from Google completely. I don't think Play Store works without logging in to a Google account does it? (Among other things)

Record the google account login details and delete the account on the phone. If the whingeing is disruptive just recreate the account and turn off all the sync options.

There used to be global phone "turn off sync" option but that may have diappeared in more recent versions of Android or been buried...

I haven't yet signed in. Nervous days:-) I have a relatively unused google account through my desktop anyway.

I suspect mapping is in the play store.

Updates to android itself don't need the play store, however a Moto5 is unlikely to see any new android updates by now?

Updates to apps do rely on the play store, but if all Tim want to use is Dialer/TextMessaging/Contacts I think he'll survive without updates.

DOH!! Meant to say: my new "fairly smart phone" is a Samsung Galaxy A10, 130quid at Tesco, this April. (Seems pretty good to me.)

In Settings > accounts, presumably you have a google account? What option are enabled under sync?

Mine keeps copies of my contacts, text messages, call history, photos, calendar, todo list ... in my case email is handled separately.

Only if you've let Apple/Google have your data (I don't) or run your own cloud/sync server (I do). Or use something like "My Phone Explorer".

I tend to agree, but by simply using their OS how do you know you're not doing that anyway, whether you have an Apple or Google account or not?

Its completely safe with Apple, they can't even give it to the FBI if the FBI demands it.

You don't have to of course, but you won't get the benefits of syncing with google or apple unless you do, or go to the effort of providing your own syncing service.

I don't know about Apple, but I think Google have got your contacts via Android whether you use their storage or not.

No, you can choose to untick "sync" for contacts under the google account, then they stay in a local database on the phone.
