Mind the Gap - Carpet Tack-Strip

I'm planning to recarpet a bedroom and am ready to install the carpet tack-strip.

The question is: What is the correct gap to leave between the edge of the tack-strip and the skirting board?

I thought this information would be easy to Google, but like so many things, it seems you can have any answer you want!

I have found some sites/ forums saying as little as 3.0mm, others saying as much as 25mm, and then just about everything in between.

Even those that suggest the gap should be related to the thickness of the carpet being laid can't agree on the multiplier. I've found some saying half the thickness, others say the same thickness, 1.1/2 times the thickness, twice the thickness - dubiety reigns!

Are there any professional carpet layers on this forum who can give me the definitive answer?

Thanks

About a quarter of an inch

A quarter inch is good for nearly all carpets. Adjust if teh carpet's particularly thick or thin. The point is that you can jam 2 layers of carpet between teh grip rod and wall, and it'll hold firm. As you've found, there's no set agreed multiplier.
