I have a long-haired dog and the usual collars with LEDs aren't readily visible in many directions because of the hair. What's needed (I think) is a collar with LEDs on stalks, but I can't find anything so am thinking of making one. The obvious approach is to make it from scratch, but I'm wondering whether it could bes based on icicle xmas lights. Has anyone here either found an off-the-peg solution that works, or made something?

I was thinking of standoffs you can get for wired LEDs, designed for holding them up off a PCB. Ah 'LED spacer' is the term:

You might want to use 5V capable LEDs as they have a built in series resistor, as then you can just solder all the wires in parallel in a ring.

Alternatively a harness and attach a LED to it.
A friend of mine found that harnesses varied enormously with regards ease of putting them on and the freedom it gave the dog when off lead. First find a suitable harness and then attach a LED device rather than looking for a harness with an inbuilt LED.
A harness with an attached lead to a seat headrest or seat belt connector is also a good way of restraining the dog in the back seat of a car. Restraining dogs in a car is now a legal requirement.
Or lateral thinking, simply give the dog a sort of tonsure, clipped ring where the collar goes, you/he might even start a trend, much more dignified than poodle pompoms

My ex kicked the f*ck out of one side and then the mice used it as a front door. I hacked out the broken bits but couldn't really use a new part as it was hard to make it fit, so I printed something that looked identical and hot glued it in place.

Yes, we (he) have (has) a good harness but it isn't worn all the time. A teardrop LED wasn't particularly visible when attached to it and disappeared somewhere in a maize stand.
Interesting, but wouldn't last long on a very energetic dog. Something that can flex and spring back would be better
Well, the Prusa Mk3 is sat behind me but inspiration is nowhere to be found :-( (yet)
Why not try one of those head torches with a strip / cob light?
They are rubber, rechargeable and, rather than small points of light, you have a long strip. I would think at least a few parts would escape his / her hair.
