Sorry to come back on this, everything is still working but I am uncomfortable with the fitting of the chandelier in the study - which is the room that had the loose connections.



It's a brass coloured chandelier, 3 x candle bulbs, brass coloured chain with lights at one end and a bell flange at the other that fits to the ceiling over the plastic rose with its cover on.



Re-fitting it yesterday was driving me round the bend so I left it and went back to it this morning. The holes on the flange do not line up with the ceiling rose. What has been done is the ceiling rose cover has holes drilled for the fixing screws inboard a bit of the flange holes and the rose holes are inward a bit of that. The outcome is putting a screw though means it is angled inwards as it goes from the flange with wider spaced holes than the rose. The rose cover has to be put on as otherwise the metal of the chandelier would touch the ceiling rose connectors.



Seems to me this is not a good way of fitting this. I could just put a new rose up and run a normal light from it or try and make a proper job with the chandelier - I have it, and it's in keeping with the house.



Is a sensible approach to use a choc-box connector to replace the ceiling rose, then add a wooden ceiling rose with a diameter bigger than the flange on the chandelier and a circular hole cut out in the middle to take the choc-block. The wooden rose can be fitted to the ceiling with holes that don't clash with the chandelier then the chandelier can be screwed to the wooden rose.



An alternative would be still use a choc-block and cut the plasterboard so it can pushed in the cavity then fit the chandelier directly to the ceiling.



Any thoughts as to best/safest approach?

Pushing choc blocks up into the ceiling is frowned upon as it does not provide complete insulation ie. Connections that can be touched. Something like this can be used the connector does have a loop in facility if that is what is in the rosette. The beauty of this is the wiring can be done without having a the light fitting dangling at the same time. Fit one half to the wiring in the ceiling connect the other half to the light fitting then lift the fitting to ceiling plug the two together push into the void and secure the fitting.

The only drawback is they are bigger than you imagine but I have had no problems in getting them in the void neatly.

I would probably do away with the rose, and re-make the connections using wagos in a wagobox. (chockbox and terminals would be also be ok) Stuff that up into the ceiling void and fix the chandelier to the ceiling with appropriate bit of wood tucked behind the plasterboard if required to get a good fixing.

The click connectors can also make a nice solution for lamps - they include their own enclosure. One half can accommodate all the "loop in" cables, and the other connects to the light fixture. It then plugs into the other bit. Handy with big heavy light fixtures where you don't want to deal with wiring stuff up at the same time as supporting a heavy fixture:

Is there room in the gap for a box of some sort, so the chock block is at least covered? Many of these seem to have been made for screwing to a kind of patress of some kind which is itself mounted on a joist or some other substantial item, as they do tend to be heavy. I'd not feel safe if it was screwed at an angle as you describe. I remember once having a glass globe cover for a lampholder in my bathroom. It was held up with a circular frame with three thumb screws that stopped the lip of the glass bowl coming out. One day there was a crash, and a lot of broken glass on the bathroom floor. The plastic surround that held the captive nut and one of the thumbscrews had cracked and the globe dropped out. I now have another one but this fitting has a more substantial fitting, ie not cheap plastic that goes brittle.

Fixing of lights does seem to be an area of less than perfect design standards. Brian
