Where can I buy a good Ultrasonic/ laser measuring unit? Perhaps something that can work out areas/volumes? Dont want to spend too much.

Maplin are doing one (N36AQ)for £14.99 reduced from £29.99 - don't know how good but at £15 meets your requirements for 'Don't want to spend too much'.

No where !

I tried a few and they were all useless. The laser bit is a scam. It might aim a laser dot but ultra sound measuring works like a cone in reverse. Ultra sound is emitted but upon leaving the transmitter scatters broadly. The end result is that unless you wish to measure totally empty rooms you will get spurious respones to such an extent as to meake the device totally undependable

Save up and get a true laser measuring device as made by Leitz and their ilk.

There are no good ultrasonic measuring devices. The Fein one (from Axminster, £25) is OK for "estate agent" work, such as decorators doing price-ups. But the cheap ones are truly awful (especially the Stanley) and non are good for anything better than that.

Laser measures are £200+ and need to be accurately level to read the right distance, not the slant.
