incapatibilty alert !

You know those washing machine service valves with the 3/4" BSP thread and little blue or red plastic handles ? They are a fairly standard design. Well, after you have screwed on the hose you cannot fully open the valve. T he back end of the handle snares on the end of the hose connector. This alw ays happens with these supposedly standard and compatible components. Why h as nobody done anything about this state of affairs ? Why is that silly BSP thread so short anyway ?

Just connected the new washing machine. As with the last one, I can turn th e valve far enough, and I'd probably want some restriction anyway, but its all a bit crap ! Simon.

Stick an extra washer into the end of the hose before screwing it onto the tap - it will stop it seating so far up the tap.

I had to do that when our current machine was new. Not because it fouled the tap but the connector on the new hose was so deep it didn't seat before the nut hit the body of the valve.

Because it's dead easy to solve.

Either turn the entire valve round 180deg, or just unscrew the little plastic handle and turn that round 180deg.

I've never had that problem. I think you must have some duff ones!

Take the handle off, refit it 180° around and - voila!

would that mean you have to choose between the ability to have it "fully on" or "fully off"?

Are we talking about the same thing here?

The ones on all the pipes here are 90deg turn. "Across the pipe" for off, "Along the pipe" for on.

If they're fitted with "along the pipe" protruding over the open end, they'll foul on the washing machine's union. If they're fitted the other way, they don't.

They even have a little arrow on the body, just in case anybody's daft enough to try to fit 'em the wrong way round.

The can only be fitted one way around. One end is a compression fitting the other a washing machine hose. However the handles are interchangeable, they come with both blue and red and can be put on in (iirc) four different directions. They should be such that, as you say, they are across the body when off but along the body but pointing away from the washing machine connector when on.

Good point, well made.

I found that the red & blue plastic handles are flimsy & break very easily. After that you have to use a spanner on them - so any problem goes away at that point.

no, because the "off" position is at a right angle to the pipe.

No, it fouls even in the optimum orientation. Simon.

The valves all look the same to me, whether B&Q, toolstation, BES etc. I think the pipes connectors are the problem - some just seat a long way in whilst the BSP thread is very short. Simon.

Where are you all buying them from? I've never had one that caught or one that snapped off!

Mmm that was the bit that was confusing

I've had to do that, but it makes the handle very counter- intuitive, like those morons who hang doors the wrong way around. With the handle in the right-angle-to-pipe position, the intuitive way to turn it to to turn it so it points /in the direction/ or the flow, not opposite to the direction of the flow. That's how I ended up snapping the handle off my tap a few weeks ago. Damn thing wouldn't turn in the "correct" direction, so I put a spanner on it and wrenched.

I'm going to file down the handle on the new tap.

That was the bit where I'd forgotten the two ends were different threads.
