I must be mad but...

I've been thinking about this one for a while. Heres an invitation to uk.d-i-y members to do a "good deed and have a laff". This is not "open house" but an invitation to those with a few days to spare and who can prove their competance!

I run a youth hostel in Devon, a big old sprawling Victorian mansion which has seen better days. It's run by a charity (YHA) so moneys always scarce. I've got a number of jobs that need doing...

3 existing showers "overlined" with plastic cladding plus decoration 2 Stud walls (4m x 3m) + decorate 3 story internal staircase cleandown and decorate 10+ doors painted / repolished sympathetically 16' x 18' period room redecorated 2 x Stained glass windows repaired (minor) Masses of groundwork, paths, lawns, woodland clearance External woodwork (not much), strip, repair and paint Ongoing repairs to roof tiles and stonework

On top of this there are a further 3 ensuites, 2 kitchens, 1 lounge and 9 bedrooms to gut and decorate but I'll save that for next year ;-)

Its the sort of thing that could be done in a short week or a long weekend by a dozen people. If you're up for it I will provide materials and feed you (properly), bring your own (and my) beer! In the first instance you can reply here, if theres any interest I'll give you an email addy and we'll go from there.

This sort of thing is normaly only open to members "but hey, it's the YHA!"

Any mugs (oops) I mean takers out there?

Sorry I can't be of help, I am useless at DIY, that's why I post on here. Have you tried checking with a few TV company's. It would make a great program I would watch, a load of builders coming together for a laugh..

Good luck anyways. Phil

Well, that was my first thought as well, but if you could convince enough of the good diyers to come then you could maybe have a number of us not so good diyers to come along as "dogs bodys" to learn from the others. I'd certainly be up for it if I could help and also learn something.

As it's for a charitable use, and a big enough project to have a whole squad of people with supervisors, it might be worth finding out if your local resettlement prison teaches building trades. The garden work might be do-able by young offenders on community service. (It would really need the hostel to have a closed season so the work could be done without residents being around.)

I used to run one in the peek district, so I fully agree with the title of your post. Sanity got to me, so I was forced to do something different.

Good luck, Tony. I am a YHA member - some time ago I responded to a call for volunteers, only to have a huge wad of legalistic forms to fill in (for insurance/Health and Safety reasons, I think). That was somewhat off-putting (when I went for my one and only parachute jump I had less of such stuff!). Unfortunately there was a change in my circumstances that made it impossible to do it, anyway. You will need to make the admin. a smoother process than the one I saw, if people are not to be scared off.
