HP Procurve Switch AC Adaptor

I've just bought an HP Procurve Switch 1700-8 (J9079A) switch online (it's an 8 port network switch) without a power supply, under the mistaken impression (from the pix on ebay) that it uses a standard co-axial "wall-wart" power plug.

It doesn't.

None of the plugs I have (and I have a large box of wall warts I've accumulated over the years) will fit, since the centre pin of the socket is too large. I've tried drilling out the likeliest one, but the centre conductor just spins round, so the drill won't "bite". Also, it looks like the centre pin in the socket has a third connector inside it, so I'm not sure a universal wall-wart will work, even if I can get the plug to go in.

Anyone know where I can get a power supply for one of these? The vendor doesn't have one, and I don't want to send the switch back until I've exhausted all avenues, since it's my fault.

Open it up and see what's connected to the socket on the inside. You can always install a different socket.

Good idea, but I'm way ahead of you. Already did that, but I can't easily get to the bottom of the PCB to either hard wire a supply, or change the connector, since the network sockets are soldered to the board, then the subchassis they're on is spot welded to the case. If needs be, I'll have another go at it, though.

Cheaper (maybe clone? but Delta a reasonable name) seems the barrel is

5.5 x 3.5mm, plenty of other 12V 1.25A supplies

Thank you, but it's cheaper to throw away this switch and buy another with a power supply!

Nope. I have several 3.5mm plugs. Don't fit.

Manual for J9079A switch claims it can take HP-5188-6700 PSU, it has a

3rd centre pin.

LOL, I'm looking at that very page right now, since someone posted the magic number HP-5188-6700.

Thank you very much - problem solved!

Nothing a Dremel can't cope with. ;)

LOL. I don't own one ..

Someone kindly provided the HP part number of the power supply, so I've ordered a cheapo clone from eBay.

I'd first find out what the supply need is and where on the pcb it goes and directly wire a suitable one in permanently. Brian
