It's interesting that "timegoesby" seems to be the more truthful face of Drivel. He admits that he knows little about combis and comes to uk.d-i-y to ask for advice on selecting one. He's also admitted that his combi can't cut the mustard for supplying a shower and that he also has to use an electric in-line water heater to boos the temperature of his hot water in his "timegoesby" persona (Thurs, Aug 31 2000).

On Aug 13 2000 he admitted to buying the cheapest, nastiest chav laminate floor he could find. On Sep 23 2000, he was begging for help for a "friend" who had filled a combi with undiluted Fernox descaler then left it like that eight months. On 07 Jan 2001 he was asking what an SDS is (most amusing given his subsequent attempts to portray himself as the SDS god), although he forgot himself partway through the thread and was replying as "Adam" to people who had originally replied to "timegoesby".

And in the rarest moment of truth to date, dIMM admitted:

I expect to see him on "DIY disaster" at some time in the near future. Because his posts make it clear that he starts projects and rarely if ever finishes them or does them properly.

AIUI there was a case a year or two ago where a plastic cold water storage cistern got heated to boiling by a failed imersion heater thermostat in a hot water cylinder. It wasn't supported across all of its base and collapsed pouring scalding water through the ceiling below onto two people in bed below, killing one.

Sudden catastrophic failure of a vented HW cylinder doesn't seem so probable, and the number in attics is probably so vanishingly small I'd be surprised if there were 'people' who "have died from sudden bursts landing on them in bed"

You could try that epoxy putty stuff, I'm told it's good but I've never used it. I'd be more inclined to put in a replacement cylinder now. A burst could be very expensive.

You might get air being sucked into the hot water through the open vent pipe. There is a positive pressure in the pipes, due to the head of water. When you run water off, the static pressure drops (explained by Bernouilli's theorem, the water velocity and the friction losses are at the expense of the pressure). You can get the pressure at the open vent tee falling below atmospheric when you run the bath hot tap. This will cause air to be sucked into the water.

More likely if the bath is on a lower floor. Avoided by limiting the pressure losses in the cold feed to the cylinder (big pipes, bends rather than elbows, full bore ball valves). Easiest fix would be to fit a service valve to the bath hot tap and use it to restrict the maximum flow.
