Wrap it well with PTFE tape and let it form to a washer shape itself. If the gaps around the fitting are far to wide for PTFE, then fill them with jointing compound and allow to cure for 24 hours. Then you won't get any further perishing problems. :-)

Hi. Have you used Fernox LS-X jointing compound? It's like clear silicon sealant. I used it to put in my cylinder and it was good on the 1" threads. I wonder if you could form a seal with this stuff like a gasket ?

I had a similar problem, which I fixed - without dismantling/draining - by slackening the nuts a bit, winding some plumbers mait-saturated hemp round the male threads behind the nuts, and then re-tightening the nuts. [I had to make a thin cranked spanner for the job by butchering a calor gas spanner].

You can also get Heat Mate high temp sealant which is a bit like the instant gasket used in auto fittings. .I think Screwfix sell it . Stuart

================== Not gasket 'paper' - proper gasket material. It's much thicker than gasket paper which would probably disintegrate in the OP's required situation.

The cylinder unions I've used in the past have had the copper part pushed out to form a sort of compression ring that seals without any washer.

Cut a washer from dense cardboard. (Obviousy not corrugated) Plaster it with something like Blue Hylomar before fitting.

I have done this numerous times on old vehicles and never had a problem.
