So that basically if you're holding the end when the water is turned on, you either have to start running very fast or the hose is going to start wriggling around all over the place.

They are crap. The inner hose is very thin and will perish or split within a year. Also not ideal if your mains pressure is high and you use fittings, such as a spray gun, that cuts off the water flow. In this case the inner tube tends to expand too much. It was the cause of my mothers expandable hose failing at the instant that the gun lever was released to stop the water flow. My mother has had two of these hoses that have failed within a year and I've had one fail after not much longer. Its not the type of hose where you can repair it by cutting off a bit and joining it to standard fittings. The fittings are bespoke and "crimped" on.

What i have found to be a lot better is the smaller diameter traditional hose but be aware that some is a lot better quality than others. I have two of different quality but both have lasted a lot longer than the expandable types.

Neighbour has had one for about 18 months. I'll ask him how it survived a cold freezing spell outside.
