No need for wikipedia - "A Guide to the Guide - Some unhelpful remarks from the author" which is the preface to my copy of the guide says it was a copyright issue.

Well you can't legally record it for free on a permanent medium from the radio. You can listen to it, and with some streaming services listen again, and after then, the only freely allowed recording media is ya mind.

And as the mind is a bit, er, unreliable, the broadcasters do kindly repeat the material so it's worth listening out for these dynamic refresh moments - but please do not overfill it to the point that random whistles and utterances become audiable to the man in the street, lest you find yourself accused of making an unpermitted public performance and then forceably despatched for extermination by the PRS/PPL mob....

Depends on what rights you gain on what exactly you have bought. I can legally rip bought CDs to MP3s but I can't really buy a VHS video tape and then download a Blueray source copy to enjoy instead.

I gave up downloading bought media anyway. I stream. Muuuuccccch cheaper as I have internet eveywhere, and in places where I don't, there are solutions that DRM cache and work offline. I've now millions of 'records' in my playlist collection, which i didn't have before.

Allowing a little for hyperbole, what proportion of that vast library do you ever expect to have time to listen to?

OK a couple of thousand in organised playlists, not millions - though I apparently have over 20 million tracks in Spotify to choose from. Never finish my aquired lot when I pop me clogs...

Still I often go trawling for stuff - my facination is sometimes the songwritters and producers and not necessarily the artist (or how they look, the dye chosen for colouring the dog etc...) though I can waste an entire TV-less evening looking for the strangest covers version of say Pink Floyds 'Wish You Were Here'.

I like me bass a bit heavy...

I had a quick listen to those. I didn't care too much for the first but the second was, how shall we say, 'an interesting take' which probably would have been better appreciated as a track amongst the rest of a whole album auditioning session rather than just in isolation.

I'm now listening to an MP3 rip of a wavefile I captured from a reel to reel dub from the original vinyl just to 'wash my ears out'.

I will have to scan it then:-)
