I've used one in the car - to see how much carbon was in the cylinders (sadly, more than I expected), and for finding things that our little boy has pushed under kitchen appliances, and for seeing how many stones he's thrown down the grid. Not brilliant, but definitely worth a tenner or so.
I'd rather not know what my insides looked like. I suspect there may be a few unpleasant surprises in there nowadays.
