Easier to use washers. You can adjust the packing distance simply.

I save all the old non-ferrous 2p pieces for jobs like this. Make useful washers.
No, they retain their structural integrity surprisingly well. Otherwise I wouldn't have suggested it.

There's not always room for washers, and anyway they cost money.

I may be wrong but ISTR that its illegal to deface or interfere with legal tender?
You can't melt them down, or break them up. I guess drilling counts as the latter.
You can bend or stretch them though.
Put them in a tram line
Modern trams are too light. You need a good old mainline steam loco
