What do you want to look at - the Moon?
Erm! no I'd use a telescope for that.
objects near to me of course.
With the single lens (per eye) type (e.g. from Chronos), the lower the "magnfication" the longer the working distance. The ones surgeons use are actually little telescopes so could potentially be focussed for quite high magnification several feet away, and there are applications which use these. They are much more expensive.
You really have to specify what you mean by "near".

If you want 2-10 yards, for flutterbies etc, a decent pair of bins; check "close focus"

are a good source for all sorts of magnifiers. 20 quid gets you a jeweller's head-mounted magnifier, but if you want the long focus distance type that you need for dentistry, expect to pay around 150 quid. These are also (IMHO) too heavy to mount on spectacles (without ripping your ears off) and need a full headband.
I had a look at that link MrD and found this guy was selling the same headworn mags
