HD foam for laptop case?

Try Jessops. I got one for my laptop and another for my projector. They do different sizes of hard case in a nice dark grey / black colour, all with foam you can alter to fit what ever you are putting in there.

Have a look at Pelican cases -

They do a range of tough polypropylene cases that are also waterproof.

In the generic ones, you get a layer of stout foam in the bottom followed by a layer with part cut fingers that you can remove and then a layer of nobbly foam in the lid to hold everything in place.

I use a large one of these to transport two notebooks that I use, complete with power supplies and accessories.

They also do a specific laptop case which is quite generic and would probably work for you.

I've had a nose around Jessops web site but most of the 'cheaper' cases (that I'm likely to be able to afford) seem too small in the fore / aft dimension?

This laptop is nearly square and 29cm deep, so allowing for a minimum

Did you notice if they did the foam on it's own Julian?

I checked the sizes and it would seem you have to go up to quite a large case to cope with the depth (29cm) of this laptop?

It's a heck of a laptop if it is 29cm (12 inches!) deep. Sounds more like a box to me. My laptop is less than 5cm deep and fits in fine.

Use a small rucksack, preferably scruffed up so it looks like a backpacker has been round Thailand in it. Far less likely to be nicked that a stainless steel case, which would look like it had expensive camera gear it. You can always shove some custom shaped foam inside if you want to protect against bangs.

Aha, a thread I can win.

My laptop is under 3cm deep, and fits nicely in an old Dremel Multi aluminium case, along with 4 extra batteries, network and camera stuff, wireless mouse, chargers, USB hub, phone charger, ... Toshiba 3110CT, under a kilo without battery.

Maplin do an ally flight case which is 350*470*165 externally. Stupidly, they don't specify the internal dimensions and it's expensive at £30. I had problems finding a large enough case for my Notebook as well, but I ended up with an Antler case that looks like a document briefcase. It doesn't offer that much mechanical protection, but it doesn't shout "look at me" either :)

Why the need for something other than a regular laptop case? I've been using a Targus backpack case for the last couple of years - it has a padded inner section that provides protection for the laptop, and enough space for cables, PSUs, etc. (where "etc" can include a basic change of clothes, toiletries/medicines, and enough paperback books to keep me going on a transatlantic flight!) -- cost about £50 in PC World.

Anything else seems to be overkill, inasmuch as you end up w/ a case that weighs considerably more than its contents!

I wouldn't assume, though, that the OP (or anyone else) is planning to take a laptop into crime-ridden areas, or be dumb enough to leave it unattended ...

Indeed it does. My suggestion was to use a battered small rucksack. It has served me well for this purpose on many occasions.

In real life, this is sometimes just unavoidable.

I think anything is a viable fix, whether it's expensive or not. The shirt off your back, anything not nailed down, or even anything that was nailed down.

If you have a situation where you have to check it in or give it the baggage handlers at the aircraft because it's a small prop job it is important to have something rather sturdier than a Targus.

It's the batteries that do that.

Mine is 33 x 30 x 5.5 .. that's nearly 5cm wider and 10 cm deeper!

I don't mind the weight as I don't intend walking very far with it.
