And you don't think those need skills?
The skills start with having good sharp chisels and planes. Expensive items that a simple DIYer probably won't possess.

I can't speak for Dave, but if I were to be in that sort of work I'd find the variety you get as a handyman perhaps more important than the money to be earned for some of it. I certainly try to practice that philosophy in my own work.
Several reasons;
I can fit doors - albeit slowly, so yes a joiner could do it quicker & cheaper. I think its best to offer honest advice to my customers.
I can earn much more doing other jobs, I'm not fast enough to earn good money hanging doors.
Also, the current trend for cheap panelled doors, they are a pain to hang & fit locks to - no real substance to the door & the promlems involved when frames are out of square - whatever you do it looks awful IMO.
There is that of course, although if I could build decks & nothing else all year round I would. I love it & the margin is excellent.
I can hang maybe 4 doors in a day - far too slow to make any money at it. Percieved value is another thing. Customer buys door for £18 + £6 for 'door pack' (hinges, locks, handles). You quote £40 per door to hang it & they can't believe it!
I know a guy who's pretty good at hanging doors. He's Reading based but might be interested. Give me an email and I'll give you his details.
John - emailed you yesterday. Did it get to you?
Oops, yes - just replied
