Gunk barrier for kitchen units beside the dishwasher

I have a recurring problem with small amounts of food and drink getting stuck to the edges of the kitchen units and doors adjacent to the dishwasher (because when the dishwasher door is open, the "body" of the dishwasher is recessed with regard to the units). (More so on the right side because I almost always load it standing on the left.)

It requires frequent scrubbing, which is also difficult to do because some of the gunk gets splattered slightly behind the front edge of the dishwasher body and whether the door is open or closed, it always blocks a strip at a particular height.

So I'm wondering about some kind of gunk guard to slip in there, ideally something that can be taken off, washed, and re-used. Any suggestions?

How about a piece of laminate, eg formica but without any backing? I forget how thick it is but less than a mm. Can be cut with care with ordinary tools. You can use a block plane on the edge if you don't mind re sharpening it.

polythene would be easier, if out of direct view

That sounds promising --- where would you get it, and how would you fix it in place (so it can be removed, washed, and put back)?

That might work too --- how would you hold it in place (so it can be removed, cleaned, and replaced easily)?

Pipe insulation? Trim if necessary, just jam it in the gap.
