GRRR!!!!! BT Fault reporting ?????

How the F***ING HELL do I get to BT to report a fault on my next door neighbour's landline?

She is a 95 year old widow living alone and therefore vulnerable, but I can't find a BT phone no, and any attempt to contact via the Internet requires me to text (no mobile phone!) or login to my BT account (I don't have such an account!)

For a supposed communications company, it is well nigh impossible to get in touch with them.

DOH !!!!!!!

That's EXACTLY the web site about which I complained.

Yep. Didn't it use to be just 150 umpteen years ago?

Dunno, but I often look past the first hit on a search. This was the fifth hit on a Startpage search for "BT report line fault":

"

BT Fault Contact Number Contact Bt Fault Phone Number using our call connection service on 0800

800150. Calls cost 7p per minute plus your standard network charge."

But note that that isn't a BT website. Interestingly, I just looked in the last BT directory we received (2017/18). That mentions the number above, but also states "0330 123 4150 if you're using a mobile". That still seems to be a valid number, but also isn't mentioned on a BT website.

Well that's wrong, 0800 numbers now *have* to be free don't they?

... or is it number-direct web site is charging you somehow if you click the number, if so it's a rip-off!

That's why i made the comment that neither was a BT website. Still, if it actually gets you through to BT in an emergency, maybe it's worth it, as the BT websites themselves don't appear to be that helpful.

Well, I was hoping that the OP would use his brain. Forgot, he's an imbecile.

Interesting that you have taken the time to look into the OPs "problem" and found the numbers. I'm 110% sure that you would not have posted here whining that you couldn't find a simple number.

So, garrreth, have you solved your neighbour's problem yet? Or are you still living next door?

Contact numbers and speaking to a real human aside, it is a crazy system that when a fault occurs you have to speak to your telecom provider who will not be doing the repair but cannot speak to Openreach who will be doing the repair!

Richard

Quite. And it is far from obvious whether it is actually a BT number.

I sat on the 0800 800150 for 35 minutes listening to the music-on-hold interspersed with the unhelpful messages apologising for the length of the queue (why not put on more operators????) before getting through to a human.

20 minutes later ... despite repeatedly describing that I had removed all the neighbour's apparatus from the line and used my spare phone to determine that it was their fault insofar as DTMF didn't work but pulse dialling still did ... and they agreed to forward the complaint to Openreach who cannot attend until two days later.

So, I repeat again, I wonder if BT are aware of more modern communications systems other than heliographs and carrier pigeons, so as to speed up actually getting in contact with them?

Not so. BT are paying for the repair, not you directly. So they have to authorise that repair, not you.

I had a frustrating experience like that once.

I had ordered broadband internet, when it had just come out. The phone support people kept telling me to "wait until tomorrow and for sure it will be operating". This went on for three weeks, each time, the same (scripted) response. They would not escalate or "ask anybody" what had happened to my order.

I went to the local mall which had a "Phone Store". Back in those days, you could do service orders there.

I happened to run into an employee who'd been doing this job for some time and he said "I know who to call..." and he disappeared into the back. Five minutes later he came back and said "it'll be ready tomorrow". I asked "Are you sure ?". "Yes, this time for real."

And at midnight (you can only turn up a service on the computer control at midnight), my service started working, which means somebody is likely to have fixed it soon after he called.

That's the difference finding "the exact right guy" makes :-)

This "we are experiencing an unusually large number of calls just now" is bollocks that they all use, whether or not they actually are. These days it's a message you get whoever and whenever you call.

They are not unique these days in apparently having no phone, I have to say. Another problem I have encountered is when you do get a person, they say are you calling from the number with the problem and you are not, then are you the person who owns the account. I do sometimes wonder if security measures have gone just a little way over the top.
